Frequently Asked Questions

What is Katelynn’s Closet, and what do you do?

Katelynn’s Closet is a 501c3 charitable organization founded in 2008 with the mission of providing needy children (boys and girls) ages 4-18 on Cape Cod & the Islands with free, gently used and new clothing and footwear. We do this by partnering with existing social service agencies such as social workers, registered non-profits, school counselors/nurses, shelters, healthcare providers and others.

Katelynn’s Closet is named after Katelynn Bearse, daughter of co-founders Ann and Matt Bearse.

Who do you serve?

We serve children in need ages 4-18 on Cape Cod & the Islands.

How does Katelynn’s Closet work?

Katelynn’s Closet does not assess need and all children for whom the requests are made remain anonymous to KLC volunteers. We rely on existing social service agencies, physicians, registered non-profits and other entities who work directly with children in need to be our distribution partners. Contact us to find out how to become a distribution partner.

Distribution Partners are responsible for:

  1. Identifying the child in need.
  2. Emailing us the child’s gender, clothing and shoe sizes, age, and any special requests (i.e. winter boots, hat/mittens, etc.)
  3. Picking up the order from our location and delivering it to the child in need.

Katelynn’s Closet is responsible for:

  1. Reaching out to social service agencies to inform them of our existence
  2. Fundraising and soliciting monetary donations to purchase clothing such as underwear, socks and other items that cannot be used second hand
  3. Organizing clothing drives (link to information on clothing drives)
  4. Sorting and packaging clothing

Do you charge for your services/clothing?

No, all clothing packages are free.

Is there a cost to become a Distribution Partner?

No, there is no cost to becoming a distribution partner.

How can my organization become a distribution partner?

Distribution partners must be existing social service agents who work with children/families or foster parents. All distribution partners subject to verification.

How Can KLC Help Your Child?

KLC cannot accept requests for clothing directly from families or caregivers. All requests must come through an existing social service agency or registered non-profit organization, or through school counselors/nurses, doctor’s offices, social workers or foster parents.

How Can I Help?

There are several ways you can help Katelynn’s Closet. For example:

  • Donate new or gently used children’s clothing and footwear in GREAT shape! (Please – no outdated, stained, or ripped clothing)
  • Organize a drive to collect “stylish” clothing for ages 4-18
  • Host a fundraising event
  • Volunteer to sort and package clothing
  • Make a personal financial contribution
  • Make a corporate financial contribution
  • Spread the word

What items does KLC accept?

We believe that all children should feel valued and therefore we will only distribute clothing that is in great shape, as often times these are the only clothing items these children have. It costs us a great deal of time and money to dispose of items that do not meet our standards of ‘gently used.’
We define “gently used” as clean, stain and rip-free, working zippers and normal to light wear. Please remember, too, that while many adult sizes may fit a child, we provide age-appropriate and “in-style” clothing to these children.
We cannot accept used underwear/undergarments, used socks or used swimsuits. We are always in need of new underwear, socks and swimsuits for boys and girls in sizes ranging from 4T-20. New footwear is also accepted.

What items need to be brand new?

Underwear, socks and swimsuits must be brand new. It is preferred that pajamas and footwear be new as well.

Where and when can I drop off donations?

You can bring your donations to our new workspace! We are located at 45 Commercial St, S. Yarmouth, MA 02664
Hours are by appointment.

I’d like to do a clothing drive, will KLC pick up the clothing?

We are unable to do pickups. Our model relies on drop-offs, and on community members hosting collection drives in their own town. Call us for information on how you can host your own collection drive.

What are KLC most-needed items?

We are always in need of new underwear, socks, pajamas and footwear for children ages 4-18.

I’m a middle/high school student. Can I get my service hours by volunteering at KLC?
